Speeding Through Content: A Challenge to Our Tolerance and Patience

Many of the leading online streaming applications have introduced a speed control option as their latest update. Seemingly, it is quite a remarkable updation as users are provided the opportunity to manually adjust the speed of the video they are watching online. But have you thought about the consequences this might lead to in the long run? Here's my take on it.

We humans naturally have common innate behaviors that help us to thrive in every situation we routinely encounter. However, patience is one such trait that is pivotal to our existence. With the inclusion of attributes that help regulate the pace of videos to save time, ultimately, our patience level is likely to gradually decline which will in turn affect our mental wellness. Earlier, while streaming videos online we used to watch them at their original speed. But now we can watch it in 1.5,2.0 etc. to save time. This change cannot be taken lightly because once we make it a habit there won't be a comeback from it. Eventually, such alterations will pave the way to a society with less tolerance level which shouldn't be allowed. So it is up to the users to think about the small details that we come across on social media platforms and not fall prey to them, though sadly, this is not even a concern.

Mindless Scrolling

Excessive use of social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook can significantly impact one's mental health. If not addressed in a timely manner, it can lead to serious consequences, as these platforms often serve as gateways to anxiety and depression. So, what factors draw people into this trap? To understand this, we must analyze how these applications operate. Firstly, they are designed to allow users to share personal life events with the world. Consequently, people tend to showcase only the happy moments while concealing the harsh realities they face. As a result, viewers are led to believe that their friends or colleagues are living peaceful and joyful lives. This creates insecurity among those scrolling through their feeds, making them feel inadequate without realizing that what they see is a filtered version of reality. Ultimately, this leads to unhealthy comparisons. How does comparing ourselves to others help in "connecting people"? Secondly, there's ...

Reckoning the Child in us

I've often wondered how childhood experiences shape our adulthood. Certain factors play a crucial role in developing an individual's mental state, including past incidents and parental care. A child raised in a loving foster family is likely to develop enthusiasm for others and enjoy a healthier mental state in early adulthood. Conversely, a child subjected to toxic parenting may exhibit signs of emotional instability as they grow older, having been deprived of love and attention or, overprotected in an unhealthy manner. Additionally, past encounters can also manifest in one’s behavior long after leaving adolescence. For instance, if you were bullied in school for your appearance, each glance in the mirror might remind you of that pain. These unpleasant memories often resurface, particularly when you find yourself in situations that echo those past experiences, such as talking to someone new or being around others who fit societal beauty standards. Such inhibitions don’t simp...
